AAC Resource Library

We are currently building up a library of alternative and augmentative communication aids (AAC) to lend to families. These are things children might use alongside words to communicate. They may use objects, symbols, photographs or sign language. Sometimes children need to try out a few different approaches before we find the one that clicks. That’s why we decided to start a library of things we could lend to families to ‘try before you buy’.

Symbol based AAC can be paper based or power based. Power based AAC can be as simple as a recordable button or as complex as a bespoke aid costing thousands of pounds. We are lucky enough to have received some funding from Woodsmith Mine Foundation so are currently buying iPads, recordable buttons and making some paper based aids to lend out. We will also be buying more Makaton resources including sign dictionaries, signed nursery rhymes and books to support children using signed approaches.

If you think this is something you’d like to try with your child just get in touch – queries@seasideslt.co.uk. We’ll start with an assessment of your child’s needs then you can start accessing our equipment. Over time we hope to expand it to include other lendable resources including sensory toys, story sacks and speech sound activities. If you see us using something that you’d love to borrow let us know and we’ll add it to the list for our library!
